Funding Opportunities

WESNet has limited funding available budgeted annually to support:

  • Travel expenses for collaborative activities (meeting with other project members or partners, research trips etc.);
  • New initiatives (workshops, new partnerships, international linkage and exchange, extended outcomes of projects);
  • Special materials (materials and small equipment for research projects, prototype cost, field test consumables etc.)

NEWLY APPROVED Initiatives

  • Collaborative travel funding for University of Manitoba researcher to meet with University of Victoria researchers to review the theoretical results obtained of connections between steel inserts and composite laminates used in turbine blades and examine the possibility of experimental testing of such connections under low temperatures.
  • Travel assistance for University of Manitoba researcher in Project 4.3 to meet with Project Lead of 4.3 at Memorial University to discuss the on-going research in the area of hybrid wind energy systems for remote communities.

Selected Previous Initiatives

  • Partial funding towards the purchase of an industry standard software analysis tool (PSS/E) to be used to explore and develop power system analysis and optimization algorithms in relation of wind energy.
  • Funding for collaborative researcher travel in the area of compressed air energy storage systems and hydrogen storage systems involving WESNet members (UQAR, MUN) and partner (WEICan).
  • Funding for materials to fabricate a 4.5m mandrel required for full scale composite met tower construction.
  • Application of SAR Satellite Images (project 1.1c) to Wind Resource Assessment for PEI Community Rink Projects. Click below to read about this initiative.
